TikTok Ban Likely to be Delayed as Trump Considers Extending Deadline
Potential Delay in TikTok Ban
The imminent U.S. TikTok ban is set for a possible delay as the deadline coincides with the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend. The administration of President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly seeking ways to extend this timeline. According to reports, the incoming administration is looking to avoid shutting down the popular social media app prematurely.
Current Administration's Stance
The present administration, led by President Joe Biden, appears to believe that addressing this issue should fall under Trump's incoming leadership. Consequently, they do not plan to interfere before the deadline on January 19. An official mentioned that users should not worry about the app facing a blackout this Sunday.
Trump's Action Plan
Michael Waltz, who will be serving as Trump’s national security adviser, stated during an appearance on Fox News' "Fox and Friends" that the new administration aims to implement strategies to prevent TikTok from going offline. Furthermore, reports from the Washington Post reveal that Trump is contemplating an executive order upon taking office, aiming to secure additional time to negotiate a potential sale or to devise a different resolution.
Trump's Shift in Strategy
Initially, Trump was at the forefront of efforts to ban TikTok during his first presidential term. However, he shifted his campaign stance, promising to rescue the app if elected. The President-elect has already petitioned the Supreme Court, which is currently deliberating on the ban, to halt the enforcement of this law.
"We will have measures in place to keep TikTok from going dark," Michael Waltz stated on Fox News' "Fox and Friends."
