At Stanford, researchers have utilized artificial intelligence (AI) to refine diabetes diagnoses, potentially improving healthcare accessibility. Traditionally, diabetes has been classified into Type 1 and Type 2. However, recent discoveries have identified subtypes within Type 2 diabetes, comprising 95% of all diabetes cases, which are linked to risks of associated conditions like kidney and heart diseases.

AI's Role in Identifying Diabetes Subtypes

"Understanding the physiology behind diabetes requires complex metabolic tests, often cumbersome and costly for clinical use," explained Tracey McLaughlin, MD, an endocrinology professor at Stanford.

"This matters, because depending on what type you have, some drugs will work better than others," said McLaughlin.

Using data from glucose monitors, researchers have developed an algorithm capable of identifying the three most common subtypes of Type 2 diabetes, predicting metabolic subtypes like insulin resistance with about 90% accuracy. This innovative application of AI means no new complex clinical settings are necessary, relying instead on data routinely collected by personal glucose monitors.
