Teal Health Secures $10 Million to Revolutionize Cervical Cancer Screening at Home
Innovating Cervical Cancer Screening
The traditional process of cervical cancer screening, often characterized by clinical settings and uncomfortable procedures, has motivated entrepreneurs to seek more convenient solutions. Teal Health, co-founded by Kara Egan and Dr. Avnesh Thakor in 2020, addresses these issues by developing an at-home cervical cancer screening product, currently awaiting FDA approval.
Market Launch and Funding
After operating in stealth mode until January 2023, Teal Health initiated clinical trials in November of the same year. The innovative concept has attracted considerable investor interest, culminating in a $10 million seed extension led by Emerson Collective and Forerunner, raising the total funding to $23 million. Notable investors include Serena Ventures and Chelsea Clinton.
"Cervical cancer screenings are the most important and often the entry point to a women's health relationship," said Kara Egan, co-founder and CEO. "More than 1 in 4 women are currently behind on this life-saving screening."
Introducing the Teal Wand
Upon receiving FDA approval, Teal Health plans to release the Teal Wand for home use. Customers will be able to order a collection kit, receive a telehealth consultation, and then use the wand to collect vaginal samples at home. Samples are then sealed and sent to a certified lab for analysis. "Teal support is available to ensure we answer any questions you have along the way," Egan assures.
Addressing Screening Gaps
Historically a leading cause of death among women, cervical cancer rates have decreased due to preventive measures, yet recent trends indicate stabilization as screening participation declines. The American Cancer Society highlights the importance of regular screenings in reducing mortality.
"Women want to stay up on their health screening, but they are balancing a lot," Egan stated, noting the increasing interest in women's health startups.
Future Prospects and Challenges
Teal Health's recent funding will be pivotal in launching the Teal Wand, expanding their telehealth platform, and bolstering patient education and support. "This funding will help us further enhance our robust telehealth platform, patient portal, educational resources, and customer support tools," Egan explained. "We’ve focused on our plans for scaling across the U.S."
Facing competition primarily from traditional OBGYN services, Teal Health aims to offer an appealing alternative by eliminating the need for in-person appointments. "The standard care is no longer working for women," Egan emphasized, linking it to declining screening rates and rising cancer cases. "By making this critical preventive screening more accessible, comfortable, and convenient, we have the power to increase screening rates and work towards eliminating cervical cancer in the US."
