Nintendo Switch 2: Everything We Know So Far

The highly anticipated successor to the Nintendo Switch is creating buzz with rumors and speculation, as the official announcement draws near. Although Nintendo has committed to revealing more about the console before the end of its fiscal year in March, specifics have been scarce, leading to a swirl of rumors about the console's features and capabilities.

The Only Confirmed Detail: Backward Compatibility

Official information from Nintendo is limited, with backward compatibility with the existing Switch games being the sole confirmed feature. This has set the rumor mill into overdrive, with third-party leaks providing the only additional insights.

Rumored Features and Speculations

Notably, Dbrand—a known accessory manufacturer—has developed a "Killswitch" carrying case based on what it claims to be the actual dimensions derived from a 3D scan of the new console. According to Dbrand CEO Adam Ijaz, the new console is expected to be larger than the Switch OLED, featuring an 8-inch screen and an extended kickstand similar to that of the OLED model.

Rumors also suggest that the Joy-Con controllers will use magnets for attachment to address the "Joy-Con drift" issue.

Leaked Mock-Ups and More Speculations

At CES 2025, accessory maker Genki displayed a 3D printed mock-up of the console, which further fueled speculations about the device’s larger size and magnetically attached Joy-Cons. CEO Eddie Tsai confirmed these features in a recent interview.

Speculated Launch Titles

As for the games, Metroid Prime 4 is expected to be a launch title, having been in development since 2017 and undergoing significant changes to align with the new console’s release. Historically, Nintendo has launched flagship titles across platforms to maximize reach, as seen with the GameCube and Wii.

The new console is also expected to feature a refreshed Mario game, considering Super Mario Odyssey was a launch hit for the original Switch. Additionally, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, with its announced 2025 release date, could also serve as a prominent launch title.

Conclusion: Navigating Speculation

While rumors stack, the only certainty is that Nintendo continues to chart a unique path in the gaming world—often unpredictable. As the gaming community waits in suspense, the upcoming Switch console promises to be significant whenever it officially arrives.
