Meta Ends Diversity Programs Amidst Evolving Legal Landscape

Update, January 10th: Meta has affirmed the details shared in the memo.

Meta's Decision to Disband DEI Programs

Meta, a significant player in the tech industry, is ending its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, influenced by the "legal and policy landscape surrounding DEI efforts" in the United States. This change was communicated to employees through a memo viewed by Axios. The company will also withdraw its representation goals and terminate its "diverse slate approach" to hiring.

Memo Outlines New Strategy

The memo, authored by Janelle Gale, Vice President of Human Resources at Meta, indicates a shift towards programs "that focus on how to apply fair and consistent practices that mitigate bias for all, no matter your background," as noted by Axios. Furthermore, Meta will cease efforts to prioritize business suppliers from diverse-owned businesses.

"The Supreme Court of the United States has recently made decisions signaling a shift in how courts will approach DEI," Gale stated. "The term 'DEI' has also become charged, in part because it is understood by some as a practice that suggests preferential treatment of some groups over others."

Meta's spokesperson Tracy Clayton confirmed the accuracy of the report to The Verge. This decision comes amidst a backdrop of evolving legal interpretations around DEI practices.

Changes in Meta's Policies

In addition to the changes in DEI strategy, Meta has revamped its Hateful Conduct Policy. New rules now permit "allegations of mental illness or abnormality when based on gender or sexual orientation," among other modifications. The company has announced plans to relocate its moderation teams from California to Texas due to "bias" concerns.
