Mercedes-Benz EV Owners Set to Access Tesla Superchargers

Mercedes-Benz accessing Tesla Superchargers

Starting in February, owners of Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles will gain access to Tesla's extensive Supercharger network. This expansion comes as part of a broader trend of vehicle manufacturers integrating with Tesla's charging stations, initially through the use of NACS-to-CCS adapters followed by the adoption of native NACS integration.

These adapters are available for purchase at authorized dealerships, allowing EV owners to exponentially increase their access to public EV chargers. Tesla currently boasts 20,000 charging stalls throughout the US and Canada, making this a significant development for Mercedes drivers.

While North American residents are just now experiencing this integration, European EV owners have had access to Tesla Superchargers for some time due to different technological standards.

Growing Network of Automakers

Mercedes joins a lineup of automakers, including Ford, General Motors, Rivian, Volvo, Polestar, and Nissan, in accessing Tesla's charging infrastructure. Although Mercedes originally planned to finalize this integration by 2024, the accelerated timeline suggests that the company has prioritized this initiative. Volkswagen is also expected to open access to Tesla chargers later this summer.

Details on Adapters

The Lectron adapter, priced at $185, is the only model tested for compatibility and safety with Mercedes-Benz EVs, according to company spokesperson Andrew Brudnicki. He highlights the device's robust interlock connection as a competitive advantage for customers. Though a recall last year affected approximately 1,600 Lectron units due to a faulty latch pin, these issues have been addressed.

Additionally, Tesla Supercharger locations will now appear in the Mercedes-Benz app's charger map. Customers can utilize the seamless Plug & Charge system, which requires no additional authorizations.

Future Developments

Later this year, Mercedes plans to introduce its first vehicles equipped with factory-installed NACS ports, although specific models have not been disclosed. The company's EV lineup ranges from the luxurious EQS to the more accessible EQE and EQB, and includes the coveted electric G-Wagen.

Mercedes is also spearheading various EV charging expansion projects, such as installing fast chargers in collaboration with MN8 Energy and participating in the Ionna venture with other major original equipment manufacturers.
