Mastodon Transitions to Nonprofit Ownership
In a strategic move contrasting the control exercised by figures like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg over social networks, Mastodon's CEO and founder, Eugen Rochko, is handing over the reins of his company to a newly established nonprofit organization. This development, announced in a blog post today, signifies a pivotal change for the nearly decade-old service.
Journey Towards Nonprofit Status
A year ago, Mastodon began the process by forming a US-based nonprofit entity to operate as a "fundraising hub." While this entity continues to function, Mastodon’s main operations will remain headquartered overseas. "We are taking the time to select the appropriate jurisdiction and structure in Europe," stated the company. "Then we will determine which other (subsidiary) legal structures are needed to support operations and sustainability." This restructuring is projected to conclude within six months.
Eugen Rochko's Stand on Tech Giants
Eugen Rochko has openly expressed his stance against prominent tech moguls. Two years ago, he publicly urged Musk to "get off the internet" and recently criticized Meta's changes in moderation policies as "deeply troubling." Despite not having a massive user base like Threads or Bluesky, Mastodon continues to pursue what it considers a moral approach amid the ever-evolving social media landscape.
