Launch of Blue Origin's Ambitious New Glenn Rocket Delayed Due to Technical Issues

Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket awaiting launch

Blue Origin’s much-anticipated launch of its New Glenn rocket was postponed on Monday due to technical difficulties encountered during the designated launch window. Originally scheduled to commence at 1 AM ET, the launch faced multiple delays throughout the three-hour timeframe before ultimately being scrubbed.

The precise timing for the next launch attempt by the space exploration company owned by Jeff Bezos remains uncertain. The New Glenn mission marks a significant milestone as Blue Origin's largest rocket to date attempts to reach space for the first time.

What is New Glenn, and why is it important?

Equipped with seven powerful BE-4 engines, the rocket’s first stage operates on liquified natural gas and liquid oxygen. Blue Origin plans for the first stage to be reused for at least 25 missions, landing vertically on a sea platform to facilitate recovery. The upper stage, however, is expendable and is designed to deliver payloads such as 13 metric tons to geostationary transfer orbit and 45 metric tons to low Earth orbit.

New Glenn has been under development for nearly ten years. Initially slated for a 2020 launch, the project has experienced several delays attributed to challenges with engine development and other technical setbacks. When launched, it has the potential to challenge the dominance of SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy, featuring a larger cargo bay and comparable payload capacity.

What to expect from New Glenn’s first launch

The launch is set to occur at Cape Canaveral, Florida. Although originally planned for January 10th, it has been rescheduled to January 13th due to adverse sea conditions in the Atlantic. The mission includes deploying the Blue Ring Pathfinder, a payload comprising a communication array, power systems, and a flight computer to trial Blue Origin’s space technologies intended for future missions.

According to Blue Origin CEO David Limp, achieving orbit remains the primary objective for the New Glenn launch, while successful booster recovery would be an added accomplishment.

Blue Origin’s senior vice president, Jarrett Jones, emphasized the thorough preparation undertaken for this inaugural flight, stating, “No matter what happens, we’ll learn, refine, and apply that knowledge to our next launch.”

How to watch New Glenn’s launch live

Interested viewers can watch the New Glenn launch via Blue Origin’s online platforms, including their website, social media channels, and YouTube, ensuring enthusiasts can witness this critical step in the company’s space exploration journey. However, the exact date of the rescheduled launch remains pending due to the recent technical challenges faced.
