Watch Duty, a nonprofit app designed to track wildfires with real-time maps and alerts, has become exceedingly popular on Apple's App Store. As residents of California endure catastrophic wildfires in Los Angeles, this app has provided essential updates and guidance.

Having launched in 2021, the app is operational across 22 states, offering critical evacuation alerts, real-time updates through various media, and an interactive map showing active fire zones. Users receive detailed information on evacuation routes, shelters, and firefighting efforts, functioning as an all-encompassing emergency resource.

The operations of Watch Duty rely on about 200 volunteers, many of whom have professional backgrounds as firefighters, dispatchers, or emergency responders. They gather wildfire data from official reports, volunteer inputs, and emergency dispatches, which are then verified through advanced tools like radio scanners, wildlife cameras, and satellite data.

According to Watch Duty, its community-driven approach allows it to offer more timely information compared to traditional services such as CalFire and InciWeb, which depend largely on governmental alerts. The app has been embraced by active firefighters and residents across the western U.S., especially those in high-risk fire zones. Its user base significantly expanded from 1.9 million in 2023 to 7.2 million by December 2024.

Social media buzz among Californians has encouraged widespread adoption of the app amidst ongoing fires in LA. As fires continue to ravage thousands of acres driven by severe winds and drought conditions, reports indicate five fatalities and more than 2,000 buildings destroyed, including celebrity homes of Paris Hilton and others.

The scale of the disaster has left over 367,000 households in California without power, with at least 130,000 residents under evacuation orders. Social media voices echo the app's significance, with one user from Butte County highlighting its vital role during significant fires like the Park Fire.

Nick Russell, vice president of operations, noted that users are drawn to Watch Duty for its consolidated and reliable information, which stands out amidst the misinformation often spread during such crises. "Quality over quantity" is their guiding principle to ensure only verified information is disseminated.
