Hinge’s new AI feature determines if your prompt response is too basic
Hinge has introduced a groundbreaking feature called "Prompt Feedback," which leverages AI to enhance the quality of user responses to profile prompts. By analyzing how individuals answer prompts, the tool determines whether a reply is specific and authentic or needs improvement. This new update aims to make dating profiles more engaging and facilitate better conversations.
At the heart of this feature is OpenAI's GPT-4o mini, which evaluates each user’s entry and provides personalized advice to help highlight their unique traits. Rather than dictating what should be written, "Prompt Feedback" offers three tiers of guidance. These tiers include: "Go a Little Deeper," prompting users to make their responses more meaningful; "Try a Small Change," suggesting slight tweaks like mentioning a specific genre or interest; and "Great Answer," which indicates the response can remain untouched.

The introduction of "Prompt Feedback" addresses a common challenge faced by users of dating apps: profiles often feature generic or clichéd answers that fail to stand out. For instance, a frequent response like "The best way to ask me out is: asking me out" may appear uninspired and could deter meaningful connections. According to a user survey, 63% of daters struggle with writing authentic and intriguing answers for their profiles, often defaulting to overused phrases that lack personal touch.
This feature launches amidst growing frustrations in the online dating community, where issues such as burnout from swiping, lackluster conversations, and ghosting are prevalent. By incorporating AI, Hinge seeks to alleviate some of these pain points, although skepticism persists among certain users wary about AI's role in shaping their matches.
Hinge's parent company, Match Group, is making significant investments in AI advancements, dedicating between $20 million and $30 million into innovative tools. One notable recent example is an AI-powered photo selector tool on Tinder, designed to help users choose the most appealing photos for their profiles. Match Group has also formed a partnership with OpenAI, leveraging its capabilities for various initiatives.
With "Prompt Feedback," Hinge aims to enhance user experiences by fostering more genuine connections, showing the power of AI in transforming online dating.
