Godox Introduces the MA5R: A MagSafe-Compatible Lighting and Charging Solution

Godox, recognized for its expertise in professional photography equipment such as flashes and reflective umbrellas, has unveiled a new smartphone-focused lighting product. Known as the MA5R, this device serves as a magnetic power bank featuring an array of diffused color-changing LEDs on its reverse side, promising to enhance phone photography while alleviating battery concerns. Priced at $49, customers can preorder through specialized online retailers, though the exact date for official release remains unclear.

The MA5R is engineered to seamlessly attach to MagSafe-compatible iPhones and smartphones that adhere to the Qi2 wireless charging standard. It can also connect via magnetic adapters to other mobile devices, providing flexibility in its use. Despite its versatility, Godox has notably omitted a standard tripod mount, which is somewhat surprising given their professional gear focus.

• The MA5R employs LEDs to generate a broad spectrum of colors and color temperatures, effectively tailoring to diverse lighting needs. Users can control these settings using the Godox mobile app via Bluetooth, adjusting the color temperature from 1800K to 10000K to fit virtually any environment.

This accessory also introduces a myriad of color options for dramatic lighting effects and includes "14 pre-programmed special effects," particularly beneficial in video shooting scenarios. For selfie enhancement, an additional smaller LED on the other side is included, improving selfie lighting when the accessory is rotated while attached to a phone.

• A front-facing LED provides a smaller range of color temperature adjustments, ranging between 2800K and 6500K.

The MA5R, measuring 13 millimeters thick, is visible when attached to a phone, containing a 5,000mAh battery. This capacity allows it to power its LEDs for approximately three hours and 40 minutes at full brightness, or up to seven hours and 20 minutes at half brightness. However, it is not sufficient to fully recharge most smartphones more than once.

Wireless charging functionality is inhibited while the LEDs are active, positioning the MA5R's charging capability as more of an auxiliary feature. Nonetheless, the device offers a promising solution for portable lighting needs.
