DJI Launches Flip Drone with Unique Features for $439
DJI has introduced its new Flip drone, merging innovation and functionality into a lightweight model designed for both novice and seasoned users. Priced at $439, the Flip offers a unique folding mechanism, turning downward to fit its large, shrouded propellers.
Combining Features from Neo and Mini Models
The Flip is described as having the simplicity of the DJI Neo and the superior imaging abilities of the DJI Mini. It incorporates elements from the Air 3S, such as a LiDAR system for obstacle detection, with propellers guarded by carbon fiber string, ensuring safety and keeping its weight under 249 grams, avoiding permit requirements in several countries.
Beginner-Friendly Features
Beginners can easily operate the Flip similarly to the Neo, using hand launches and selecting intelligent shooting modes like Dronie and Boomerang. This allows automated takeoffs with obstacle avoidance, assisted by LiDAR sensors.
Advanced Control Options
For advanced users, the option to fly with a controller is available, unlocking DJI's FocusTrack technology, including ActiveTrack 4.0. However, when flying backward, caution is necessary as the Flip lacks rear obstacle detection.
Sport Mode and Battery Life
The Flip reaches speeds up to 26 MPH in sport mode, but users should be wary of windy conditions due to its lightweight build. Its batteries, weighing only 83.5 grams, provide roughly 34 minutes of flight time.
High-Quality Video Capabilities
Equipped with a 1/1.3-inch sensor, the Flip excels in video quality, supporting 4K at 60fps. However, unlike the Mini 4 Pro, vertical shooting is limited to 2.7K resolution.
Comparison with Competitors
DJI's Flip is seen as a competitor to HoverAir, featuring longer flight times and larger propellers, making it a formidable option in the lightweight drone market. Priced options include $639 with the RC 2 screen controller and $779 with a Fly More kit, enhancing its appeal among drone enthusiasts.
