Amazon Prime to End Its Clothing Try-On Program in January
Amazon to Cease Prime Try Before You Buy Service by End of January
Amazon has announced that it will be winding down its Prime Try Before You Buy program, a service that allowed Prime members to try on clothing before finalizing their purchases. The program is scheduled to end on January 31st, as indicated by a notice on the service's landing page.
Reasons for Discontinuation
In a statement, Amazon spokesperson Maxine Tagay explained that the decision to discontinue the service stems from its limited functionality, which only applied to a restricted range of items. She highlighted that customers have progressively adopted Amazon's new AI-powered features to make shopping decisions.
AI-Powered Features Taking Over
Tagay pointed out examples such as the Virtual Try-On AR, a feature enabling customers to visualize 3D rendered shoes on their feet via smartphone cameras. Additionally, Amazon’s LLM-powered "personalized size recommendations" use customer feedback to better suggest appropriate sizes.
Background of Try Before You Buy
Originally launched in 2018 under the name Amazon Wardrobe, the Prime Try Before You Buy initiative allowed members to select up to six items, try them for a week, and return what they didn't wish to keep. This model resonated with personalized services like Stitch Fix while focusing heavily on the return process, something Amazon has been working to streamline.
Company-Wide Cost-Cutting Measures
This move aligns with Amazon's broader cost-cutting strategies which, according to industry observers, include workforce reductions and the closure of physical stores. The company has also been scaling back efforts in areas like grocery innovation, as seen with the discontinued Dash Carts and cashier-less checkout options.
Official Statement from Amazon
Given the combination of Try Before You Buy only scaling to a limited number of items and customers increasingly using our new AI-powered features like virtual try-on, personalized size recommendations, review highlights, and improved size charts to make sure they find the right fit, we're phasing out the Try Before You Buy option, effective January 31, 2025. Of course, customers will continue to enjoy fast, free shipping, with easy, free returns on our full apparel selection.
